TortoiseBot is out-of-the-box the simplest, and most cost-efficient ROS-based robot that has Mapping and Navigation capabilities. The core of TortoiseBot is a Raspberry Pi 4 running Raspberry Pi OS with pre-installed ROS. So the user can simply assemble the robot with included assembly guide in just 30 minutes and start working on the robot immediately without any additional setup. The robot also has support for Gazebo Physics Simulator where you can simulate your robot algorithms without actually risking the robot and also visualize the sensor data in RViz. I bought this kit in August 2021. This is a great product and the best part is its Open-source. This is very helpful for robotics enthusiasts who want to learn and practice ROS not just in Software using sims but even through Hardware. I use this all the time to test out something I have done in Sim and see if it behave the same as in sim. Moreover, this product can be expanded with modules so as to increase its capabilities. Finally, for people worried about if it is difficult to build I am here to say that is not the case at all, I am usually a bull in china shop kind of person when it comes to mechanically building things and even I found this easy to build and maintain.
Tortoise bot is an amazing product for beginners in ROS to learn, experiment and explore. The software stack developed for the bot is just amazing and works like magic. We are using it to teach college students about ROS and Image processing and it improved the efficiency of teaching exponentially compared to teaching with just simulation. I will definitely recommend it to everyone who is interested in Robotics. And the tortoise bot community is an additional plus point.
